Samba Study #7
acrylic on paper, 10" x 14", 2009

Samba is the dance of celebration and it is my favorite dance. Inspired by Carnaval in Rio, Samba is sometimes said to be the most difficult of the Latin dances. This may be due to the eight different rhythms which can be teased out of any Samba music. My own theory is if you were dancing in the sand, on the shores of Brazil, with a drum circle around an open fire, each drummer would be keeping a different rhythm, but they would all fall in sync. You could dance to any one of them. It's like life. There is always a cause to celebrate.
