Samba One oil on paper, 20" x 28", 2009
Samba is the dance of celebration and it is also my favorite dance. Inspired by Carnaval in Rio, Samba is sometimes said to be the most difficult of the Latin dances with its eight different rhythms. So if you were on the shores of Brazil, at night, with an open fire surrounded by a circle of drums, dancing in the sand, each drummer would be keeping a different rhythm, but they would all fall in sync. You could dance to any one of them. In this way Samba is like life and in life there is always cause to celebrate.
