Cyrano, oil on canvas, 36" x 60", 1992

This painting is an expression of the artist's appreciation for literature.
The play, Cyrano de Bergerac, by Edmond Rostand, is well known.
Less well known is the life and works of the real Renaissance figure of de Bergerac.
He differed from Rostand's character in many ways, but in one way he was similar.
Like the character, the real Cyrano was a romantic.
The text in the painting is from one of the original Cyrano's love letters.
It is the closing paragraph and it reads "...et si dans l'autre monde, comme en celui-ci,
nos qualites different, vous serez toujours ma Souvraine,
et moi, fus-je entre les flammes qui devoreront ma substance,
je serai toujours, votre serviteur, tres ardent, Cyrano de Bergerac.*"
If you send me an email, I will be happy to send to you a translation of this love letter passage,
which relates so well to the images in the painting. I was very fortunate to find it.
